26th January, Re-public day was celebrated at Government Lower Primary School Vibhuthipura,

L. B. Sashtri Nagar Tent School, (both Bangalore) and National Middle School, Chennai

è At Government Lower Primary School, the occasion was graced by Wing Commander V. G. Krishna, a pilot in Indian Air Force

He hoisted the flag and shared experiences of his professional life with the curious Children

Later, we distributed sweets to the Children of two other tent Schools – L. B. Sashtri Nagar and Brindavan

We spent Rs 2000 for to buy 10 kg of sweets for the Children. Thanks to Dinesh for partly contributing towards this

The mats were handed over the School last week

Christmas Celebration: Coming Saturday, 17^th December 2011, Christmas celebrations are planned at the School

Inter-School Competition – Last week, a Cultural competition was organized where nearly 35 Schools (including private Schools) took part

Our School students won prizes in 4 events

2^nd place in Quiz (4 students participated)

2^nd place in Fancy dress (2 students took part)

1^st prize clay modeling (4^th Standard student won the prize)

2^nd prize Poem reciting (4^th Standard student won the prize)

Extra – Tuition Classes – Starting two, extra coaching classes are being conducted for the students

Happy to say that these classes are being conducted in the multi-purpose hall which we partly sponsored

Inter School Competition - At the inter School organized on Saturday, 19^th November 2011, the Children of our School

Won the first prize. They set up an exhibition which was selling provisions. More than 20 Schools

English Teaching – Last Saturday, 15^th Oct 2011, Sujith and myself had been to the School @ Bangalore. Sujith taught basic English for 5^th grade students

This week, 22^nd Oct 2011, this class will continue at Govt Lower Primary School, Vibhuthipura, Bangalore. The motive is to

make sure that atleast the 5^th grade students, who will move on to a higher School next year, are comfortable in basic communication

One Step Forward – Thanks to the support from Hariharan, we have started to sponsor one volunteer Teacher at a Tent Schools in Bangalore

This School is located in L B Nagar, Bangalore. There are classes from 1 to 5 and close 50 students study there. Tent Schools

are make shift Schools which provide basic education to the Children of the construction workers. We identified this School with

the help of Mr Kantaraju, Cluster Resource Person (C. R. P), Education Dept. Since there was only one Teacher

at the School, we are going ahead with Supporting this School. Thank you once again Hari

Any one for Teaching?- TWith exams over last week, we can continue to teach Basic English and computers at the School. Basic knowledge of English is not up to the mark - a few 2^nd and 3^rd class students are weak at identifying English letter. I will be going to teach this Saturday. If any of you can spare an hour or two over this Saturday (1^st October), let me know. (For those who want to teach computers - There is a computer lab in use where basics of computers can be taught)

Volunteer Teacher – The new volunteer Teacher whom we are sponsoring has been attending School starting 13^th August 2011. This Teacher's presence

becomes all the more important now as another regular Teacher has gone on Maternity leave and there is no replacement. So now the School which has

classes up to 5^th standard has only 4 Teachering staff. 2 regular Teacher and 2 volunteer Teacher (one sponsored by us and one by another NGO)

Independence Day Celebration - Today Independence day was celebrated in National Middle School, Pallavaram, Chennai and Government Lower Primary School, Vibhuthipura, Bangalore. Uniform – Last week, the Teacher, went shopping for the uniform which we will be sponsoring for this academic year. Shirt and Trouser material were purchased. Totally, Shirt material cost Rs 4176 (per meter cost - Rs 40; totally 104.4meters was purchased; 40*104.4 = 4176). Totally, Trouser material cost Rs 12, 784 (per meter cost - Rs 85; totally 150.4meters was purchased;85*150.4= 12784). Totally Rs 17,260 was spent, including Rs 300 for transportation and labor charges)

Since we are short of funds we will be requesting parents to bear the stitching charges

School Uniform – Like 2009, the Teacher has requested us to provide uniform for the Children. We had received very good feedback after that donation and the Teacher had said that this was the best contribution that we ever made. Going by the feedback, we would also like to donate the same this year

Approximate cost for uniform for a single student would be Rs 320 (with 100+ children the budget is may well cross Rs 30,000). Since we don't have sufficient funds, a deficit of Rs 10,000+, we request generous and happily willing contribution, whatever may be possible

Starting today, for the next 10 days, summer camp with fun filled activities like games, drawing, painting and also yoga will be held (from 09:30am till 01:30pm). Final exams – Currently the final exams for the students is in progress. Exams end on 29^th March 2011. Classes will continue till 10^th April 2011 before this academic year closes. Lets wish the students good luck and guide them for their future endeavors

Sponsoring extra Teacher - Currently the volunteer Teacher (Mrs. Rajeeshwari) whom we are sponsoring is being paid a monthly salary of Rs 2000 (Rs 1000 is contributed by our two friends, Rajesh Ananth and the rest of Rs 1000 is from our common pool)

Feedback - The feedback that I have received from the Head Teacher about the volunteer Teacher has been very good. She is dedicated, hard working and takes interest in the children. She also goes to the home of differently abled children for teaching them at home

We have been sponsoring this extra volunteer Teacher for the last two academic years (2009-2010 & 2010-2011). And we plan to sponsor her for the next academic year as well. Next year we plan to raise the salary for this volunteer Teacher. Scholarship for SC/ST students – Last Saturday (19^th March 2011) 40 "SC/ST" students were given scholarship (Rs 75 each)

Hall Construction – thanks to many of your sincere efforts, the hall construction is almost complete. The only remaining part is the "windows and plumbing" . The Head Teacher has been trying to contact to various donors to support this work., including the Councilor of the ward

As of now there is no financial assistance in sight, forthcoming. If you believe in this initiative and the impact it has on the children, do come forward – every little contribution is valuable

Crisis in Japan

As said in the last update, we plan to do our bit for the Tsunami struck Japan. There are a good number of organizations doing invaluable service to the people out there. Till now the only lead we got is the Japanese Red Cross

Since there are exams the sports day which was planned during the first week has been postponed for the next academic year

Crisis in Japan – The deadly disaster that has struck Japan and the subsequent loss of life and property, is colossal – to say the least. You must have seen coverage in the press. While we offer our prayers being miles away, it is only humane that we participate and contribute in whatever way we can and however possible

School Development Meeting – Last Saturday, 26^th Feb 2011, we had the School development meeting which involved different people – the Teachers, Parents, People from the Education Department, Voluntary Organizations and the Ward Corporator. I had been to the meeting and should say, it was a good understanding experience. Below were the points which were touched upon

- The meeting started with C.R.P (Cluster Resource Person) Mr. Kantaraju (the host) introducing the members

- Parents shared the thoughts on the School, in what areas and in what areas there can be improvement

- Education department officials invited suggestions on how to get parents, from the lower economic sections, send their children to School. Parents who were already sending their children to School suggested that all the children from one area could join and go to School together

- Our work towards the development of the School was appreciated. The C.R.P and others thanked us for our donations and efforts made till date

- We discussed how the School was, what's the current situation and how the School's should be in the future – the vision for future

Outcome:

- On request, Shri. Geeta Vivekananda (corporator, ward no 81) said that officials who would clean the road would also clean the School's (common area) – Since School is also a Government property

- The C.R.P requested us – staff, voluntary organizations - to prepare a action plan for each School and work effectively and in close cooperation

Sincerely thank you all who worked till date (in whatever possible way) for the development of the School. Do keep it up. It's really a wonderful difference to be felt

National Middle School, Pallavaram, Chennai – During a weekend, a farewell is planned for the 8^th standard students, in the coming days. Shall let know once concrete dates are known. May be we can share our "Educational" and "Career" experience with such students and encourage them to continue studying

Christmas celebration: Christmas celebrations were held on 18^th December 2010 – during which dance, dramas, puppet shows were staged. Drama highlighting the birth of Jesus Christ was also enacted. We distributed 200 snack boxes for the children (each costing Rs 23)

Children’s day - On 13 Nov Children's day was observed. The teachers highlighted the significance of this day and encouraged them to follow on the footsteps of pundit Nehru. Few well performing students were selected to sit on the dais and roses were given to them. Sweets and cookies were distributed to all the children.

Hall construction details – The flooring for the multi-purpose hall is complete. Painting and window is the only work still pending. Seen below is the amount needed and for what purpose the amount is needed – this information was shared by the Head Teacher of the School, Sheela Madam. Feel free to talk to her more on this construction (+918971749859)
