23rd June 2008

Last Saturday 21st June 2008, Vinay and I went to the school which we are involved with – G. L. P. S Vibhuthipura, Bangalore, 560037. The Head Mistress of the school had called & informed Vinay that the school has reopened. Just to give a brief on that school – it has classes from 1st to 5th standard and also pre-school (anganwadi). Below are the details of the school

Class Number of Students

Pre-school 30
1st Standard 20
2nd Standard 30
3rd Standard 29
4th Standard 22
5th Standard 20

3 Staff members

Once at school, we met the Head Mistress and a Master. We sat to note and talked about the materials supplied by the Government and the different requirements for the school which they are in need of. The government supplies one set of clothes (unstitched) for the children. The children usually wear that one set for the whole week. For this the reason, the Teacher was asking if we could supply with another pair of clothes (white color). The Teacher also enquired if we could provide socks, shoes, tie, belt and school bags. The textbooks are supplied by the government but notebooks and materials like pens, pencils, eraser, sharper and other teaching aids like charts, globe etc are not provided by the government. The children were sitting on torn plastic mats. It will be good if we provide them with a few. Apart from that, we asked if there were items for recreation like sports and games, they said that they did have one chess board, carom board. There was a request for this as well. Apart from us there are other couple of organizations and individuals, that are involved in their own little way in helping this school. Consolidated below are the lists of items which the staff has requested from us

Item Quantity

School bags 150
White uniform 150
Shoes, Socks 150
Tie, Belt 150
Mats 15
Library books, charts, maps, globe
Games, Sports items

The school also has a computer but it has to be repaired. It was kept in a near by library building. Lost of dust gathered. We dusted it and tried to get it working but it needs professional help

The Head Mistress showed us cd’s distributed by the Azim Premji Foundation. Once the computer is up and running, it shall be beneficial for the Teachers as well as students

Some time back there was a question asked, as to what purpose the computers in the school will be used either teaching or school management. I did ask this to the Head Mistress and the answer is -they shall be using it for teaching needs and not for the management purpose

One improvement noticeable over the last visit was that – there is a staircase constructed for onephysically disabled child to get into the classroom J

That’s the happy information from this week’s visit.

Additionally we are working on the bank account and website creation. Hopefully both should be done by early next week. Shall keep you all updated

@Vinay,

Do add if I missed any thing

Below is one of the images which were taken on this visit. Shall send another one also shortly in another mail (size constraint)
